Timber windows need to suit the appearance of your home and how each room is used. Compare the proposed frame design, glass and finish, then check the care and fitting work included in the quotation.

Start with the window layout

Look at the frame proportions, glass divisions and opening arrangement together. Ask which sections open, where the handles sit and how the window will look from inside.

Use photos of the existing windows and a reference image to explain the style you want. The drawing should show the actual design proposed for your openings.

Identify the timber and finish

Ask for the product name, timber type and finish in writing. Check the outside and inside colours and which choices are available with that model.

If you are considering aluminium-clad timber too, compare the construction drawings and care instructions for both options.

Compare the complete window

Confirm which glass is included. If heat loss, outside noise or security matters, ask for evidence covering the complete proposed design.

Compare similar sizes and opening arrangements. A timber frame alone does not establish a heat-loss rating or the performance of the glass.

Understand the maintenance

Request the instructions for the selected paint or other protective finish, frame, seals and moving parts. Follow the supplier's guidance on cleaning and checking the finish.

Ask what to do if the finish becomes damaged and which products are suitable. A general repainting interval cannot cover every finish and location.

Confirm the fitting work

Check removal of the old windows, agreed repairs around the openings and VAT. Read the product and fitting warranty terms before confirming the order.

Send W4Y photos and approximate measurements for an initial estimate. After you accept it, the final survey checks the details needed for manufacture and fitting.

Questions

How often do timber windows need repainting?

Use the instructions for the actual finish. The window's position and condition also matter when planning maintenance.

Can I choose double or triple glazing?

Ask which glazing options are available with the selected system and opening design. Keep the agreed specification with the quote.

Can I match the look of my existing windows?

Send clear photos of the frame proportions and glass divisions. Ask for drawings showing the proposed replacement so you can compare the appearance before ordering.

Send photos, approximate measurements and your postcode. Tell us which windows you want to replace and the appearance you prefer.
