By material

uPVC, timber, aluminium or alu-clad?

The quote names the material and profile - “premium window” is not a specification.

uPVC is the sensible default for many replacement windows: low-maintenance and available in a broad system range.

Timber suits listed buildings and projects where authentic material matters. Aluminium earns its place where slimmer sightlines or larger panes lead the brief. Alu-clad timber keeps timber inside with a weather-facing aluminium shell outside.

Replacement window FAQs

Window questions

Common questions before you compare quotes.

Window FAQs.

01What is a casement window?

It is the common outward-opening window used on most UK homes. The sash is normally hinged at the side or top. “Casement” describes the way it opens; the frame can be specified in uPVC, timber, aluminium or another suitable material.

02What is the difference between flush and standard casement windows?

Both normally open outwards. On a flush casement, the opening sash sits level with the outer frame when closed; on a standard casement it stands proud. Compare the actual corner joint and section, not just a distant photograph.

03Are tilt-and-turn windows draughty?

Performance depends on the chosen system, manufacture, glass, hardware, adjustment and installation. A survey also checks that the inward-opening sash has enough room.

04Can you quote without visiting?

Yes. Send outside photographs, rough sizes and the number of openings for a first written price. The survey then confirms manufacture sizes, access, cills, glass and finishing details before anything is ordered.

05Can I keep a traditional look without choosing timber?

Often, yes. Flush uPVC systems such as Residence 9 and Eurocell Modus are useful starting points, while sash and steel routes answer different heritage briefs.

06What should I compare besides frame colour?

Compare opening style, visible frame width, material, profile system, glass, hardware, vents, cills, structural work, inside finish and fitting. Those items should be written into the quote.
