Steel and steel-look windows can have a similar grid pattern while using different materials and construction. To compare prices, start with a drawing and a clear description of what each quote includes.
Identify the product
Ask for the frame material and system name. Steel and steel-look aluminium use different frame materials. Decorative bars can create a grid pattern too, so ask how the proposed window is made. Crittall is a manufacturer's brand; a similar look does not mean a window is made by Crittall.
Agree the opening and pane layout
Decide which sections need to open and which can stay fixed. Check handle and hinge positions. Ask how the grid is made: does it divide separate glass panes, or are decorative bars applied to the glass? A close-up photo of the look you want helps when enquiring.
Separate indoor and outdoor use
An internal screen between rooms has a different job from an external window. The quote should say where the product will be used. For an external opening, ask for the performance information for the proposed window. For an internal screen, say whether you want fixed glass, an opening section or a door.
Check the glass and finish
Confirm the glass specification, privacy choices and frame colour. If heat loss or noise matters, ask for evidence for the complete proposed design. "Steel-look" alone does not establish performance.
Compare the full fitting scope
Check whether delivery, removal of the old window, installation, repairs around the opening and VAT are included. Give each company the same approximate sizes and requirements. Write down what differs between the proposals.
Questions
Is steel always more expensive than steel-look aluminium?
Compare quotes for your actual opening. Design, glass, finish and fitting work change the total; a material label alone is not a price comparison.
Are decorative bars the same as separate small panes?
No. Ask for a drawing and close-up sample showing how the grid is formed.
Can I use an internal-screen price to budget for an external window?
Request a separate quotation for the external opening. It needs a product and fitting specification suitable for that use.
Send photos, approximate window sizes, your postcode and a reference picture of the grid you like. Tell us which windows you want to replace.
