Windows affect how much heat leaves your home. The glass, frame and fitting work all matter. When choosing replacements, ask for information about the complete window you are considering.

Compare the complete-window figure

A U-value describes how easily heat passes through a product. A lower figure means less heat passes through it. Ask whether the quoted figure covers the complete window or just the glass. Use complete-window figures when comparing replacement options.

Check which glass is included

Ask whether the quote includes double or triple glazing and request the glass specification. This gives you a clear record of what you are buying.

Compare the actual frame system

Ask for the name of the frame system and its complete-window performance information. Consider appearance and upkeep alongside heat loss. Compare the actual options proposed for your home rather than choosing by the material name alone.

Include the fitting work

Check how the installation will be completed and what work around the opening is included. Ask who will deal with any repairs to the surrounding plaster or render.

Discuss ventilation

Include ventilation in the conversation before ordering. Ask how fresh air will enter the rooms and how moisture will be removed. Mention any existing condensation or ventilation system.

Questions

Will new windows reduce my heating bills?

Energy-efficient windows can reduce heat loss. Any change in your bills also depends on the existing windows, the rest of the home and how it is heated.

Which frame material should I choose?

Compare appearance, care requirements and complete-window performance of the options available for your opening. Ask for those details alongside the price.
