A front door needs to suit your entrance and everyday use. Start with the whole opening, including any glass beside or above the door, then compare the complete products proposed.

Start with photos of the entrance

Take a clear photo from inside and, where safe, from outside at ground level. Include the surrounding frame, floor and path. Note anything that affects access or the direction in which the door can open.

Compare actual door products

Look at the opening door and its frame together. Compare the proposed material, construction, glass and fittings. Portico is Windows4You's main composite door supplier. The specification should name the chosen product rather than rely on a general description of composite doors.

Choose the finish and glass together

Think about the inside and outside colours and how the frame will match. Consider daylight and privacy when choosing glass. Ask which glass specification is proposed for the door and any side panels.

Check operation and the threshold

Confirm the opening direction and handle position. Discuss the threshold, which is the bottom part of the frame you step over. The proposed detail needs to account for the inside floor and outside levels. Mention access needs before the design is agreed.

Ask what supports performance claims

If security, heat loss or outside noise matters to you, ask for information covering the complete proposed door and frame. Share any specific insurance requirement before ordering. A claim about one component should not be treated as a result for the whole door.

Explore a Portico design

Use our Portico door designer to explore a design. Share your choice when contacting Windows4You. You can also start an enquiry with photos and approximate measurements.

Confirm the fitting work and documents

Check VAT, the work included around the opening and who will remove the old door. Read the care information and warranty terms. After you accept the initial estimate, the final survey checks the details needed to confirm the order.

Questions

Should I choose a door from a photograph alone?

Use photographs for ideas, then agree the actual model, finish, glass and fittings for your opening.

Can the new door keep the existing frame?

Compatibility needs to be assessed for the proposed product. Include the existing frame in your enquiry photos.

Do I need perfect measurements for an initial estimate?

Approximate measurements and clear photos can start the enquiry. The final survey confirms the order details.

Send photos of your entrance, approximate measurements and your postcode. Include a chosen design if you have one.
