Steel and steel-look aluminium can look similar from a distance. Compare the frame material, joints, glass and opening movement of the actual products proposed for your home. Check that each product is intended for its proposed indoor or outdoor use.
Confirm the frame material
A steel system uses steel framing. Steel-look aluminium uses aluminium framing designed to resemble steel. Ask for the material and product name in writing. Colour and grid pattern alone do not identify the construction.
Look closely at the frame divisions
Compare drawings of the same opening. Check the frame around the outside and where opening sections meet fixed glass. Ask how the grid is formed. Bars applied to glass differ from divisions containing separate panes. Look at the corners, joints and view from both sides. A close-up sample helps more than a distant photograph.
Separate internal and external products
An internal glazed screen divides rooms. An external window or door forms part of the outside of the building. The specification must suit that use. For an internal design, explain how people will move between rooms. For an external opening, request information for the proposed window or door.
Compare glass and performance
Ask which glass is included and what information applies to the complete proposed product. If heat loss, noise or security matters, compare evidence for the selected construction. Frame material alone does not guarantee a result. Check opening direction, handle position and nearby space too.
Check care and fitting work
Request care instructions for the chosen finish and fittings. Confirm the product warranty and its conditions. Compare the same delivery and fitting work: removal of old products, repairs around the opening and VAT can change the total.
Questions
Is steel-look aluminium made from steel?
No. Its frame is aluminium. Ask for the material and product name on the quote.
Will two products with the same grid look identical?
Not necessarily. Frame widths, joints, glass divisions and fittings can differ. Compare drawings and samples.
Which material should I choose?
Compare the available products for your intended use, appearance and budget. Ask for the complete specification before deciding.
Send photos, approximate sizes, postcode and a reference image. Say whether the product is for inside or outside.
