Patio doors change how you move between home and garden. Some panels fold to one side; others slide across the opening. Lift and slide and PSK doors use different mechanisms, so understand the movement before comparing colours or glass layouts.
Bifold doors
Linked panels fold to one or both sides. Allow space for the folded panels, nearby furniture and the route into the garden. If you want to step outside without folding the whole set, ask how everyday access would work.
Sliding patio doors
Moving panels slide along tracks and pass alongside neighbouring panels. Ask which panels move and how much of the opening will be clear. Check the drawing to see where the frames will divide your view when the doors are closed.
Lift and slide doors
Turning the handle operates a lifting mechanism so the moving panel can slide. Try a representative door if possible. The effort needed depends on the system and the size of the panel.
PSK tilt and slide doors
PSK doors have a tilt position and a separate sliding movement. To slide, the panel moves away from its closed position and travels alongside the neighbouring panel. Ask to see how the proposed door operates. Windows4You offers PSK options in uPVC, aluminium and timber. Available layouts depend on the selected system.
Plan the floor and threshold together
The threshold is the bottom part of the door frame that you step over. Plan its height alongside the indoor floor and outside surface. Mention any access needs early. Ask how rainwater will drain away and how wide the opening will be.
Compare like-for-like proposals
Ask each quote to name the door system and show which panels move or stay fixed. Check the material, glass, finish and fitting work included. Ask for evidence for any claims about heat loss, noise reduction or security.
Questions
Are PSK and lift and slide the same?
No. PSK has a tilt position and a sliding movement. Lift and slide uses a lifting mechanism to prepare the panel for sliding.
Which gives the widest opening?
It depends on size, layout and system. Ask for the width you can walk through when the doors are open, shown on the proposed drawing.
Can I have a level threshold?
That depends on the chosen system and floor levels. Tell us about access needs early so the detail can be discussed.
Send photos, approximate measurements and your postcode. Tell us how you want to use the doors.
